
At least 14 people have lost their lives in Punjab’s Amritsar district after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The tragic incident has been reported from five villages — Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, Therewal, and Talwandi Ghuman.
According to authorities, six more individuals have been hospitalised and are currently undergoing treatment for complications believed to have been caused by the consumption of the illicit liquor, commonly referred to as hooch.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney confirmed the death toll and informed the media that Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh has visited the affected areas to assess the situation and monitor ongoing investigations.
Police have arrested five people in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as Prabhjit Singh, who is believed to be the main perpetrator, along with Kulbir Singh, Sahib Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Ninder Kaur. Law enforcement officials stated that all five suspects were involved in the production and distribution of the tainted liquor.
A case has been officially registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Excise Act. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have assured strict action against those responsible for this tragic incident, which has sparked public concern in the region.
