AAP Govt Opposes Conversion Of Panjab University To Central, CM Mann Writes To HM Amit Shah

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his intervention to prevent the conversation of Panjab University to Central University, after the High Court directed the Central government to examine the possibility of Panjab University’s conversion to a Central University.

Before this, a lot of students and netizens also opposed this decision. In the letter written to Home Minister Amit Shah, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann wrote:

“I am writing to apprise you and seek your personal indulgence for an urgent and serious issue regarding the status of Panjab University, Chandigarh. For some time, certain vested interests have been trying to push the matter for change of status of Panjab University into a Central University and are even approaching the Courts for the same.

As you may be aware, at the time of the reorganization of the State of Punjab in 1966, Panjab University was declared as an ‘Inter State Body Corporate’ under section 72(1) of the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966 enacted by the Parliament. The status of Panjab University was affirmed in CWP No.8025 of 2007 titled as Dr. A.C.Julka & others v/s Panjab University & Others. Recently, the Punjab & Haryana High Court in CWP No.10775 of 2022 has sought a conscious decision from the Union Ministries of Home Affairs and Education on the issue of converting Panjab University into a Central University.”

CM Mann even shared the copy of the letter on his twitter handle:

CM Mann cleared that the Punjab government won’t be tolerating any changes in the character of Panjab University, it has a special place in the hearts of Punjabis and an emotional connection with the people of Punjab, and also reminded that since its inception, the University is functioning in Punjab, thus urged HM Amit Shah and union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to intervene and prevent the centralisation of Panjab University.
