After Months Of Silence, Jaishankar Finally Holds Talks With Canadian Foreign Minister

In a long-awaited step towards mending strained ties, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to his Canadian counterpart Mélanie Joly—marking their first official conversation since the major diplomatic fallout in 2023.

The two ministers held discussions amid ongoing tensions triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations about Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had strongly rejected the claims, leading to a diplomatic standoff, expulsion of diplomats, and a freeze in relations.

This fresh conversation, while brief, is being seen as a crucial thaw in frosty ties. According to official statements, the dialogue touched upon core issues including the safety of diplomats, interference in internal matters, and broader concerns over extremism.

Jaishankar reaffirmed that India remains committed to protecting its sovereignty and ensuring that Canadian soil is not misused by anti-India elements. Meanwhile, Canada reiterated its stand on protecting free expression within its legal framework.

Although no breakthrough was announced, this first contact suggests both sides may be open to rebuilding communication channels. Officials from both countries highlighted that the conversation was professional and necessary, reflecting the importance of keeping diplomatic doors open even during difficult times.

Observers now await if this renewed dialogue can help stabilize the deeply frayed relationship between the two democratic allies.
