An Air India flight traveling from Chicago to Delhi had to turn back nearly 10 hours into its journey due to a major issue with its lavatories. Out of the twelve onboard, eleven became clogged, leaving only one functional restroom in the business class for around 300 passengers.
The problem surfaced about four and a half hours into the flight, just as the aircraft crossed over Greenland. With most lavatories inoperable and a long journey ahead, the airline decided to return to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, significantly delaying passengers from reaching their destination.
Addressing the situation, Air India described it as a “technical issue.” Upon arrival in Chicago, passengers were accommodated to minimize inconvenience, the airline stated.
“AI126 operating Chicago to Delhi on 6 March 2025 air-returned to Chicago due to a technical issue. Upon landing at Chicago, all passengers and crew disembarked normally and have been provided with accommodation to minimise inconvenience,” an Air India spokesperson said.
The airline also assured affected passengers of alternative travel arrangements.
“Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination. In addition, full refunds on cancellation and complimentary rescheduling are also being offered to passengers if opted by them. At Air India, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain top priority,” the spokesperson added.
Following the incident, the aircraft remained grounded in Chicago for two days to undergo maintenance and thorough cleaning before being cleared for operations.
