In a dramatic political development, Assam Police on April 23 arrested AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam from Nagaon for making a highly provocative statement that accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating the tragic Pahalgam terror attack.
The statement, which gained rapid traction on social media, described the deadly assault in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 Hindu tourists as a “BJP-planned conspiracy.” The comment triggered a storm of criticism, with many deeming it a deliberate attempt to stir communal unrest and malign national leadership.
A formal case (No. 347/25) has been filed against Islam at the Nagaon Police Station under Sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), citing incitement and anti-national rhetoric.
This marks Assam’s first major crackdown on inflammatory political commentary following the tragic incident in Pahalgam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned the MLA’s remarks, asserting that Assam will deal sternly with anyone justifying or downplaying the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack.
“Freedom of speech doesn’t mean glorifying terrorism or shaming our martyrs. We won’t tolerate such betrayal of our nation’s soul,” the CM declared.
While the AIUDF party remains silent, growing public outrage and protests are demanding strict legal action against Islam.
