Akash Deep dedicates historic 10-wicket haul to sister battling cancer at Edgbaston

Akash Deep delivered a sensational 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston as India secured its first-ever Test win at the venue on July 6. Speaking after the match, the fast bowler emotionally dedicated his performance to his elder sister, who has been fighting cancer for the past two months. “My older sister is suffering from cancer… she is stable now, and I dedicate this match to her,” Akash said in an interview with Star Sports.

The 27-year-old pacer’s journey has been full of personal loss and quiet struggle. Originally from Sasaram in Bihar, Akash lost his father in 2015 and his brother soon after. He moved to Durgapur to chase his cricket dreams and gradually rose through the ranks. After the win, he broke down during a JioCinema interview with Cheteshwar Pujara, saying, “Whenever I held the ball… your face was popping up… We are all with you.” His sister Akhand Jyoti, currently in stage-3 treatment, told Aajtak she has six more months of recovery. Her message? “Don’t worry about me, just play for India.”

This win is historic—not just for Akash Deep, but for Indian cricket. It marks India’s biggest away Test victory by runs and the best bowling figures by an Indian in England since 1986. It’s a powerful reminder of how personal pain can fuel greatness.
