Amazon Web Services To Invest $8.2 Billion In Maharashtra To Boost Cloud Infrastructure

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon (AMZN.O), is set to invest approximately $8.2 billion in Maharashtra over the next few years, according to India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This investment is part of India’s broader push to enhance local cloud data storage infrastructure and digital transformation.

India’s cloud services sector has been expanding rapidly, with the International Data Corporation (IDC) estimating the market at $8.3 billion in 2023. By 2028, it is projected to nearly triple, reaching $24.2 billion. AWS’s investment aims to capitalize on this growth while bolstering India’s digital economy.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this investment would lead to significant employment opportunities and technological advancements, with the rollout expected between 2029 and 2030. AWS plans to deploy cutting-edge graphics processing units (GPUs), advanced cloud management solutions, and other state-of-the-art technologies to enhance India’s digital ecosystem.

Currently, Amazon operates two major data centers in India—one in Mumbai, launched in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, which became operational in 2022. Additionally, in 2023, the company pledged another $2 billion to expand its e-commerce business in India, reinforcing its commitment to one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
