Authorities have reopened Amritsar and Chandigarh international airports for full flight operations after a week-long closure, which was initiated due to security concerns and India’s Operation Sindoor. The suspension of services had been in effect since May 7, as part of a broader security measure across 32 airports in northern and western India following heightened tensions with Pakistan.
Flight services to and from Amritsar’s Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport and Chandigarh’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport resumed on May 12, 2025. A spokesperson for the Chandigarh airport confirmed, “Flight services to and from Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh, have resumed as of 10.30 am on May 12, 2025. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for updated schedules.” Similarly, an official at Amritsar’s airport mentioned, “Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar also reopened to all commercial, civil, domestic, and international flights starting 10.18 am on May 12, 2025.” However, they clarified that no flights were scheduled to take off or land immediately, and it may take some time before the airport returns to full operational capacity.
The temporary closure was implemented as a precautionary measure following a series of drone incursions and retaliatory airstrikes during Operation Sindoor. Before the suspension, Amritsar’s airport had handled 407 flights between April 29 and May 5, 2025, with nearly 68,000 passengers traveling.
