Amritsar Temple Blast Suspect Killed in Police Encounter, Another Escapes

A suspect linked to the blast outside Amritsar’s Thakur Dwara Temple was shot dead in an encounter with the police, a senior officer confirmed on Monday. Another suspect managed to escape, and efforts are underway to track him down.

The explosion, which occurred on March 15, was triggered when an individual hurled an explosive device toward the temple, causing damage to a section of its wall and shattering nearby window panes.

Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, stated that based on specific intelligence, Amritsar police were able to locate the individuals responsible for the attack.

“Police teams tracked the suspects in Rajasansi. The accused opened fire, injuring HC Gurpreet Singh and striking Insp. Amolak Singh’s turban,” Yadav shared in a post on X.

“Acting in self-defence, the police party fired back, injuring the accused. He was taken to Civil Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The other accused fled, and efforts are on to arrest him,” he further stated.

CCTV footage captured two unidentified individuals arriving at the temple on a motorcycle. One of them was seen throwing the explosive device before they both fled the scene. Following the incident, Punjab Police indicated a possible link to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, in orchestrating the attack.

Though no casualties were reported, the explosion caused panic among residents in Amritsar’s Khandwala area.
