Amul Increases Milk Prices Across India By Rs 2 Per Litre From May 14

Amul milk packets after Amul milk price hike announcement in India

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the iconic Amul brand, has announced a nationwide increase in milk prices. Starting May 14, consumers will have to pay Rs 2 more per litre for fresh milk variants across major markets in India. The latest revision comes nearly a year after the previous Amul milk price hike.

According to GCMMF, the increase has become necessary due to rising operational and production expenses. Costs related to cattle feed, fuel, and packaging materials have increased significantly over the past year, putting pressure on dairy cooperatives and milk producers.

The federation stated that the Amul milk price hike translates to an increase of around 2.5 to 3.5 percent across different milk variants. Officials also highlighted that the revision remains lower than the average food inflation rate in the country.

Under the revised pricing structure, Amul Taaza will now cost Rs 29 for a 500 ml pack and Rs 57 for one litre. Amul Gold 500 ml has been priced at Rs 35, while Amul Shakti 500 ml will now cost Rs 32. The one-litre Amul Tea Special pack will retail at Rs 66, and buffalo milk 500 ml has been revised to Rs 39.

GCMMF further revealed that member unions had already increased payments to farmers by nearly 3.7 percent over the last year. The cooperative model followed by Amul ensures that a large portion of consumer payments directly benefits milk producers. Nearly 80 paise from every rupee spent on milk goes back to farmers.

The federation said the current Amul milk price hike will mainly support more than 3.6 million milk producers associated with the cooperative. The additional revenue is expected to help farmers manage rising input costs and continue stable milk production.

The move comes at a time when Indian households are already dealing with increasing food expenses. However, GCMMF believes the revision is necessary to maintain supply chains and ensure fair compensation for dairy farmers.
