Anita Anand Is Now The First Woman Of Colour To Become Canada’s Defence Minister

Anita Anand, who has been the representative of Liberal Party from the riding of Oakville since the 2019 Federal Elections, has now been appointed as the Defence Minister of the country. She made history by becoming the first-ever woman of colour to be appointed as Canada’s Defence Minister.

Not only this, her appointment was also historic as no woman has held the position in almost 3 decades. She is also the first Indian-Canadian of a Hindu background to become a federal minister in Canada. Anita has succeeded Harjit Sajjan in the position.

Her appointment comes at the times when the military of Canada faces a sexual misconduct crisis. Under Harjit Sajjan’s leadership, the Canadian military faced a sexual misconduct crisis which so far has not been solved. It is being deemed as a major reason as to why Trudeau wanted a female minister to lead the position.

The 44th Canadian Federal Elections concluded with the victory of Liberal Party and Justin Trudeau winning a straight historic third term. PM Justin Trudeau held a major Cabinet shakeup recently and ministers were appointed to various ministries sitting in the cabinet. Of the 38 sworn-in cabinet members, only 10 have been given their prior roles, rest all have been appointed to new ministries.
