Anurag Kashyap Summoned by Surat Court Over Controversial Remarks Against Brahmin Community

After a complaint was filed against filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap over a controversial remark about the Brahmin community, the JMFC court in Surat has issued a notice summoning him to appear on May 7.

The notice follows a complaint by Surat-based lawyer Kamlesh Rawal, who represented the Brahmin community. Rawal submitted Mr. Kashyap’s social media posts along with his apology as evidence. After reviewing the documents, the court accepted the complaint and directed Mr. Kashyap—or his legal representative—to attend the hearing. Should they fail to appear, the court may proceed with a unilateral decision.

Speaking to IANS, Rawal said, “On April 16, Mr Kashyap made an objectionable comment regarding the Brahmin community, and Aditya Dutta had asked him to refrain from making such remarks. Reacting to this, Mr Kashyap had said – What have you Brahmins accomplished? Now, I have filed a complaint in the Surat court under sec BNS of 196, 197, 351, 352, 353, and 356. After doing my verification and cross-checking all the documents submitted by me, the court has served a notice to Mr Kashyap to appear before the court on May 7.”

Separately, RTI activist Atish Tiwari also filed a complaint against Mr. Kashyap in Mumbai.

To refresh memory, the ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ director had controversially stated, “Brahmin pe main m*a..koi problem (I’ll pee on the Brahmins…any problem)?” This comment was made in response to someone writing, “Brahmins are your father.”

Facing intense backlash online, Mr. Kashyap later posted an apology on social media, stating he couldn’t and wouldn’t retract his words. He wrote, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (cultural values).”
