Aus Cricketer Adam Gilchrist Urges Dhoni to Retire from IPL for CSK’s Future

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), once the most dominant team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), now find themselves on the brink of elimination in IPL 2025. A series of missteps, including auction mistakes, injuries to key players, and the aging MS Dhoni, have led to their underwhelming performance this season. While mathematically still in the race for the playoffs, CSK’s chances are slim. Dhoni himself has hinted that the team should focus on next season, aiming to build a more stable lineup.

Legendary wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist believes Dhoni should consider stepping away from the IPL. Despite his admiration for Dhoni’s achievements, Gilchrist suggests that it’s time for the icon to retire. He expressed, “The big one, MS Dhoni. He has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He has achieved everything that there is. MS… well, he’ll know what he wants to do, but I’m saying, for the future – it’s going to cost me this, I know – but he perhaps doesn’t need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon.”

Dhoni’s return for another season after CSK’s victory in IPL 2023, where they clinched a record-extending fifth title, raised hopes for a grand farewell. However, after missing out on the playoffs last year and struggling with just 140 runs this season, the signs have been grim. Dhoni’s knee issues have limited his ability to bat long innings, and CSK’s coach, Stephen Fleming, has often noted that Dhoni’s physical limitations restrict his batting position.

Many fans have expressed disappointment, feeling that Dhoni’s legacy could be at risk by continuing to play beyond his prime. At 43, with his best years behind him, the call for Dhoni to retire grows louder, and Gilchrist’s comments only reinforce that sentiment.
