Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on Monday launched ‘Bharat Gen’, a powerful new AI-based Large Language Model (LLM) made entirely in India. Designed to understand and work with multiple Indian languages, this model is expected to boost AI innovation across sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance.
Bharat Gen has been developed as part of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and is being implemented by the TIH Foundation for IoT and IoE at IIT Bombay. The initiative is supported by the Department of Science and Technology and brings together experts, researchers, and institutions from across the country.
"Launched India’s first-of-its-kind, indigenously developed, Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven , government-funded Multimodal "Large Language Model" (LLM) for Indian languages.

Calling it a major step forward, Mr. Singh said, Bharat Gen is a “national mission to create AI that is ethical, inclusive, multilingual, and deeply rooted in Indian values and ethos.”
This AI model combines text, speech, and image capabilities and works in 22 Indian languages, making it easier to build solutions for India’s diverse population.
“This initiative will empower critical sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, delivering region-specific AI solutions that understand and serve every Indian,” Mr. Singh added.
He also shared a personal story from his constituency, Udhampur, where an AI-powered doctor now speaks in the local language of the patient.
“It not only builds trust but has a placebo-like psychological effect, enabling better care in remote regions connected with superspeciality hospitals across India,” he said.
Highlighting the broader impact of AI in governance, Mr. Singh said that platforms like CPGRAMS are already using multilingual AI to improve how citizens give feedback and get their concerns addressed.
