Amit Shah Launches Bharat Taxi Introducing Zero Commission Driver Owned Cab Platform

Amit Shah inaugurates Bharat Taxi launch in New Delhi

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on February 5 launched a new government-backed ride-hailing platform aimed at transforming India’s cab aggregation space. The initiative, unveiled at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, marks the Bharat Taxi launch, a move positioned as a cooperative alternative to private giants like Ola and Uber.

Unlike existing platforms, the Bharat Taxi launch introduces a driver-owned mobility model rooted in the government’s ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ vision. Under this framework, drivers, referred to as Sarathis, are not treated as gig workers but as co-owners and shareholders of the platform. The initiative aims to reduce dependency on private aggregators while ensuring fair income distribution across the sector.

Zero Commission And Surge-Free Pricing

One of the biggest highlights of the Bharat Taxi launch is its zero-commission structure. While private cab aggregators typically deduct 20 to 30 percent per ride, Bharat Taxi operates on a flat daily access fee of ₹30. Surge pricing has been eliminated entirely, offering transparent and regulated fares for passengers while enabling drivers to retain a larger share of their earnings.

Industry estimates suggest this structure could make rides nearly 30 percent cheaper without impacting driver income. By removing algorithm-driven price fluctuations, the Bharat Taxi launch seeks to restore predictability and trust for both drivers and commuters.

Sarathi Hi Malik Cooperative Model

All drivers onboarded after the Bharat Taxi launch are registered under the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited in accordance with the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. During the launch event, top-performing drivers were issued share certificates, formally recognising them as stakeholders in the cooperative.

Each Sarathi receives ₹5 lakh personal accident insurance and ₹5 lakh family health insurance, providing much-needed social security in India’s gig economy. Drivers are also free to work across multiple platforms, as there are no exclusivity clauses tied to the Bharat Taxi launch.

Women Empowerment Through Bike Didi

Gender inclusion is another key focus of the Bharat Taxi launch. Through the “Bike Didi” initiative, over 150 women drivers have already joined the platform, gaining access to safe, dignified, and cooperative-backed employment opportunities.

Digital Integration And Expansion Plans

The platform is integrated with India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, including DigiLocker for verification and UMANG for service delivery. Emergency support is directly linked to local police networks, with 35 dedicated booths operating across Delhi.

With over three lakh drivers onboarded and nearly 10,000 daily rides recorded during pilot operations in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, the Bharat Taxi launch sets the foundation for nationwide expansion over the next two years.
