Bihar: JD(U)’s Stand On “Agnipath” Troubles BJP Before Presidential Polls

There is something going on behind the curtains between Janata Dal (United) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar. First on the matter of caste census, then population control, and now on the newly launched “agnipath” scheme, the stand of JD(U) has troubled its alliance partner BJP.

Earlier, even on the matter of caste census, the differences between JD(U) and BJP came to the fore. Now with JD(U)’s stand on “agnipath” scheme, the troubles for the BJP have increased.

JD(U), despite being a part of NDA at state and national level, has said that the Central government must rethink on “agnipath” scheme. As various violent incidents are being reported, the Centre must immediately rethink about its move.

Even on presidential elections, as per the media reports and sources, the JD(U) would clear its stand after the candidates of the NDA and UPA alliance are declared. The voting for the presidential elections will take place on July 18 and results will be announced on July 21. But before that, the political tussle between the BJP and JDU has tensed the Saffron party.

The Janata Dal (United) has 16 members of parliament in Lok Sabha, while 45 MLAs in Bihar assembly and a few in other states, and 5 members in the Rajya Sabha. So, the JD(U)’s numbers are crucial for the BJP to secure the victory of the NDA’s candidate.

In the past, the JD(U) has been changing its stand at times. During the last parliamentary elections, when the JDU was a part of the Mahagathbandhan govt in Bihar, it voted in favour of the then NDA candidate Shri Ramnath Kovind. Now it’s interesting to watch the next move of JD(U).
