21-Year-Old Student Takes On A Polluted River And Starts Cleaning Ajnar In MP

A 21-year-old BSc student in Madhya Pradesh has taken matters into his own hands to tackle severe river pollution in Biaora. Surendra Singh Chaudhary, known online as Bittu Tabahi, began the cleanup on January 26, 2026, removing waste and debris from the polluted water despite serious risks, as Bittu Tabahi cleans Ajnar River.

Student Takes On Ajnar River Pollution

Chaudhary started cleaning the Ajnar River largely on his own after seeing the amount of garbage and debris choking the waterway. His work involved removing plastic, polythene and other accumulated waste from the river near a local temple.

The cleanup also came with health risks. Chaudhary reportedly developed infections in his limbs while working in the polluted water. He also encountered snakes during the campaign but continued returning to the river.

His efforts gained attention on social media after he began sharing before-and-after photographs of the river. The images showed the difference between heavily polluted stretches and areas cleared during the cleanup.

Municipality Extends Support

The Bittu Tabahi cleans Ajnar River campaign eventually received support from the Biaora municipality. Municipal Sub-Engineer Rupesh Kumar Netam said officials provided heavy machinery to help remove old waste and debris.

The municipality deployed a Poclain excavator to clear accumulated polythene, garbage and other material from the river. Local residents also joined the cleanup after seeing Chaudhary’s efforts.

Netam said the municipality conducts cleaning drives for rivers and drains every year before the monsoon. Increased water flow during the rainy season can then help remove some of the remaining debris.

Officials also confirmed that Chaudhary’s before-and-after photographs were genuine. They said the images accurately reflected the river’s condition before and after the cleanup and subsequent water flow.

Untreated Wastewater Remains A Concern

While Bittu Tabahi cleans Ajnar River has highlighted the impact one person can make, officials say the larger pollution problem remains unresolved.

According to ANI, five major drains discharge wastewater into the Biaora River. This continuous flow of untreated waste could undo cleanup efforts unless authorities address the source of the pollution.

The Bittu Tabahi cleans Ajnar River campaign has therefore drawn attention not only to one student’s determination but also to the need for sustained civic action. His efforts show how individual initiative can encourage residents and local authorities to take action.
