Bollywood Films With An Official Entry For Oscars / Academy Awards In The Last 10 Years

Oscar is also known as the Academy Awards is regarded as the most famous and prestigious awards in the entertainment industry. The awards are international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements, as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership. As this award is the dream of every Indian movie and that’s why today we have come up with the bollywood movies which got an official entry in the Academy awards.

1. Adaminte Makan Abu

Starting with the 2011 released movie Adaminte Makan Abu, a Malayalam drama film which is directed by Salim Ahamed starring Salim Kumar, Zarina Wahab, Mukesh, Kalabhavan Mani, Nedumudi Venu and Suraj Venjarammoodu who played an excellent work in the movie. The story is based on a poor attar seller whose only remaining wish in life is the Hajj pilgrimage, which he strives hard to fulfill. 2. Barfi 2012

Starring Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, and Ileana D’cruz 2012 released Bollywood film Barfi is the film which was selected as India’s Offical entry  nominated for 85th Academy Award. This comedy-drama film based on the story of the Murphy Johnson (Barfi) a deaf-mute boy who lives in Darjeeling, and his relationships with two women Shruti and Jhilmil. Jhilmil an autistic girl played by Priyanka Chopra was nominated for 59th Filmfare awards in the category of the best actress. The film was written and directed by Anurag Basu, produced by Ronnie Screwvala & Siddharth Roy and released under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures.

3. The Good Road

The first Gujarati film which was selected for the Indian entry for the best foreign-language film at 86th Academy Awards but was not nominated. The story of Gujarati drama film released in 2013 is focusing on several stories which are intertwined, with the center of the action being a highway in the village Kutch. On the other hand the film won the award for Best Gujarati Film at the 60th National Film Awards. “The Good Road” is directed by Gyan Correa and in the lead role is done by Sonali Kulkarni.

4. Liar’s Dice

The story of Kamla, a young mother from a tribal community and her daughter with her pet goat, embark on a journey to find her husband who has been missing for the last five months and how they meet an army deserter and find her husband. The role of Kamla is played by Geetanjali Thapa wherein the role of army deserter we see the Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The 2013 released Liar’s Dice was written and directed by Geetu Mohandas, and was also selected for India’s official entry at the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film but was not nominated for the Oscar.

5. Court

2014 released Legal drama film which examines the legal system through the Mumbai session court Mumbai trial to sing aging, Narayan Kamble (Vira Sathidar), who is accused of encouraging a manhole worker to commit suicide through one of his folk songs. The legal drama film is directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, the film received critical acclaim and went on to win the National Film Award for the Best Feature Film at the 62nd National Film Awards. The film is starring Vira Sathidar, Vivek Gomber, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Pardeep Joshi, Usha Bane, Shirish Pawar.

6. Visaranai

Visaranai is a Tamil film which is inspired by the novel Lock Up by M.Chandrakumar. Starring Dinesh, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Anandhi, Pradheesh Raj, Kishore, and Silambarasan Rathnasamy played the lead roles. Visaranai tells the story of two men before and after thrown into Kafkaesque scenario in which they get tortured for a confession, the film received several awards and the “Visaranai” was also selected as India’s official entry for the best foreign-language film at the 89th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.

7. Newton

Newton is a black comedy-drama film, starring the two masterpieces of Bollywood Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi in the lead roles where Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav were seen in the supporting roles, film is directed by Amit v Masurkar and was released in year 2017. The story deals with the boy Nutan “Newton” Kumar, a government clerk on the reserve is sent on election duty to a Naxal -controlled town in the jungles of Chattisgarh.  The film was nominated as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language film at the 90th Academy Awards.

8. Village Rockstars

The Assamese language film which was selected as India’s official entry to the 91st Academy Awards, but was not nominated for top nine films in the Oscar. Village Rockstars is written, edited, co-produced, and directed by Rima Das, who is a self-taught filmmaker. The story deals with Dhunu a ten-year girl who is a protagonist amidst a group of real village rock stars. Growing up in hardship, she cherished the aspiration of having her rock band. Her life although engulfed by hostile natural calamities doesn’t bar her from dreaming of owning a real guitar, the film is starring two child artists Bhanita Das and Manabendra Das.

9. Gully Boy

Musical drama film which directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film features Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as the main leads, where Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Varma, Amruta Subhash, and Vijay Raaz were seen in the supporting roles. Gully boy is inspired by the lives of Indian street Rappers, mainly the story of Murad Ahmed, a final year college student who lives in the slum area of the Mumbai with his abusive father Aftab Shakir Ahmed brings home a much younger second wife, much to the chagrin of the family. Murad nurtures a fascination for rap music. His longtime and overtly possessive girlfriend Safeena Firdausi is training to be a surgeon and routinely meets him in secret and how he becomes one of India’s top rappers, Gully boy was also selected in the 92nd Academy Awards

10. Jallikattu

2019 released film Jallikattu follows the story of a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gathering to hunt down the animal, a Malayalam language film which features Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad, and Santhy Balachandra, the film was selected as the Indian entry for the Best International feature film at 93rd academy awards among 27 other films.

These Indian films have never won an Oscar, but the unique concepts of these films hit the pitch of India’s official entry in the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language.
