A British woman visiting India has accused a man of raping her at a hotel in southwest Delhi, police confirmed on Thursday. The suspect has been arrested.
The woman also reported an incident of molestation by a hotel housekeeping staff member in the elevator. A separate case was filed against the staff member, who has also been taken into custody.
Delhi Police have informed the British High Commission, which has assured support for the woman and is coordinating with local authorities.
According to officials, the woman had been in India for about 45 days, traveling through Maharashtra and Goa before reaching Delhi. On Tuesday, she had plans to meet Kailash, 24, whom she had recently connected with on Instagram.
Police received a distress call from a hospital between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Wednesday. At the hospital, the woman recounted that she was first harassed in the hotel elevator before meeting Kailash, who allegedly assaulted her in her room.
Investigators discovered Kailash had signed into the hotel register, which helped them track him down. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and authorities have seized his phone to examine his social media interactions.
This shocking case follows a similar incident in Karnataka’s Koppal district, where an Israeli tourist was allegedly raped, and her male companion was killed. All accused in that case have been arrested.
