Chandigarh’s Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu Crowned Miss Universe 2021, Becomes First Ever Punjabi To Win The Title

21-year-old, Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu, from Punjab, has been crowned the Miss Universe 2021. Among the finalists were representatives from Paraguay and South Africa, who were crowned first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu has become the 70th Miss Universe and was crowned by Andrea Meza, Miss Universe 2020.

Harnaaz brought back the Miss Universe title to India after a huge gap of 21 years. Lara Dutta won the title in 2000 and ever since, an Indian hadn’t won the title until Harnaaz. Overall, this is only the third instance that an Indian has won the title. Sushmita Sen was the first ever Indian to be crowned Miss Universe, back in 1994. Then Lara Dutta won it again in 2000 and now Chandigarh’s Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu has brought the title back home.

This also means that Harnaaz is the first ever Punjabi to ever win the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant. In the last round, the contestants were asked, “What advice would you give to young women watching on how to deal with the pressures they face today”.

Harnaaz replied,  “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today.”

Harnaaz was also crowned Miss Universe India in October 2021. Her beauty pageant journey began with Times Fresh Face back in 2017. She’s currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Public Administration. Harnaaz also has an acting career in the Punjabi Film Industry. She’s acted in a couple of movies and we hope we’ll see her in even more movies now that she’s the Miss Universe 2021.
