In a thoughtful and much-needed move, the Greater Chennai Corporation has opened two air-conditioned rest lounges specially for gig workers—like food, grocery, and parcel delivery personnel—who work long hours across the city in tough conditions.
These modern lounges, built at a cost of ₹25 lakh, are designed in a clean Scandinavian style. They can seat up to 25 people and offer clean drinking water, mobile charging points, and hygienic washrooms. For many gig workers, especially women, this space is more than just a place to sit—it’s a safe and respectful environment.
Anupriya, a woman delivery agent, shared, “We used to wait outside restaurants with no place to rest. This lounge feels safe, even at night. I’m thankful to the Corporation and the Chief Minister.”
Another delivery worker, Kalaiarasan, said, “Chennai is so hot. We used to rest in parks. This lounge gives us peace and comfort.”
Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu had mentioned this idea in his budget speech, and the Chennai Corporation now plans to open more lounges across the city based on the pilot’s success.
This initiative not only brings relief to delivery workers but also sets a new example for how cities can treat gig workers with dignity and care.
