Congress MP Manish Tewari Demands The Release Of Rajoana, Convicted For Assassinating Former CM Beant Singh

Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib and former union minister Manish Tewari has sought the release of Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted for the assassination of former Punjab CM Beant Singh.

Congress MP Tewari even tweeted:

” Being a Terror Victim I understand anguish of my colleague @RavneetBittu but as a Lawyer & MP from Punjab it is my considered view-S.Balwant Singh Rajoana having served 26 years in Prison his death sentence be commuted to life & he be released by passing orders under Sec 432 CRPC”.

“There comes a time when we have to move on, I’m of the view that Balwant Singh Rajoana has served 26 years of prison, he’s been on death row since 2007, therefore time has come to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment”. Congress MP Manish Tewari to news agency ANI, which was tweeted by the ANI twitter handle.

Quoting this tweet, Manish Tewari replied:

“…And release him from prison invoking Section 432 of CRPC. Criminal jurisprudence of incarceration needs to be grounded in reformation & not retribution”.

Section 432 of Cr. PC says

“When any person has been sentenced to punishment for an offence, the appropriate Government may, at any time, without Conditions or upon any conditions which the person sentenced accepts, suspend the execution of his sentence or remit the whole or any part of the punishment to which he has been sentenced.”

Tewari’s stand is completely opposite to that of Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, the grandson of Beant Singh, over the issue.

Recently, when Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal had urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure the release of Rajoana, Congress MP Bittu also wrote to Prime Minister urging him not to give any relief to Rajoana as it could have devastating ramification for Punjab’s future.

“Any favourable decision on giving clemency to Rajoana, the assassin of a sitting chief minister of a state will send a very wrong message and further embolden the enemies of the country to give shape to their sinister plots against our motherland,” Bittu wrote in his letter to PM.
