A violent clash erupted between two student groups during a live performance by Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh. The altercation turned deadly, resulting in the fatal stabbing of a student, while four others sustained injuries. The deceased, Aditya Thakur, a second-year B.Ed student from Himachal Pradesh, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
The Sector 11 police station registered a murder case and launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred on Friday evening. According to initial reports, a scuffle between rival student groups broke out behind the stage during Sharma’s concert. As tensions escalated, four students were stabbed, and the attackers fled.
Masoom Sharma’s performance had attracted a large crowd, with students gathering well before the scheduled time. The singer arrived at PU around 6 pm and began performing. However, the loud music and cheering masked the violence happening backstage. The altercation only came to light when Thakur collapsed due to his injuries, prompting students to raise an alarm.
Despite strict security at PU’s entry gates and inside the venue, the incident resulted in a tragic loss. University authorities and police officials responded swiftly, but the damage had already been done.
Parvinder Singh Negi, ABVP president at Panjab University, condemned the violence and criticized the security lapse, vowing to protest against the failure to prevent such an incident.
