Delhi To Transform 3,575 Bus Stops With GPS Tracking And Digital Route Maps

Delhi bus stops with GPS tracking and digital route maps

Delhi is set to transform around 3,575 bus stops with digital passenger information systems, GPS-based bus tracking, route maps and several new passenger amenities. The Delhi bus stops redevelopment project is expected to make public bus travel more convenient and transparent for commuters.

The ₹650-crore project is being taken up through the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC). The cost will also cover maintenance of the redeveloped bus stops for 20 years.

Digital Displays To Show Real-Time Bus Information

The upgraded Delhi bus stops will feature digital passenger information systems that can display bus routes and real-time arrival information.

The transport department is working to integrate the system with GPS data from buses. This will allow commuters to see which bus is approaching their stop and its expected arrival time.

Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said the complete plan has been prepared and tenders are expected to be floated next week. According to him, the project is aimed at improving reliability and transparency in Delhi’s bus transport system.

Metro-Style Route Maps At Bus Stops

The government is also working on metro-style route maps for the upgraded bus stops.

These maps will show the origin, destination and intermediate stops of buses operating from each location. Commuters will therefore be able to access information about bus numbers and routes directly at the stop.

The planned system will also be connected with the bus tracking mechanism to provide expected arrival information.

New Facilities Planned At Delhi Bus Stops

The Delhi bus stops redevelopment project will include several additional passenger facilities.

The upgraded stops are expected to have panic alarms, LED lighting and weather information displays. Provisions for solar panels will also be included.

Digital advertising panels are another part of the plan. Advertising revenue is expected to help recover the cost of redevelopment and long-term maintenance.

Survey To Identify More Bus Stops

The project will cover existing bus stops, while a citywide survey will identify locations where additional bus queue stops may be required.

A project management consultant will conduct the survey of the existing network and identify areas that require new facilities.

The redevelopment tender is expected to require the work to be completed within six months of the contract being awarded.

Private Participation Planned In Redevelopment

The government plans to implement the project through private participation. Revenue generated through advertising is expected to contribute towards the redevelopment and maintenance costs.

Before finalising the redevelopment framework, the government examined bus stop designs in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Navi Mumbai. Designs and approaches used in international cities such as London and Singapore were also studied.

Delhi Also Exploring AI-Based Bus Management

The transport department is separately examining the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the city’s wider bus management system.

The proposed Bus Management System could use historical and real-time traffic data to improve estimated arrival times, predict delays and optimise fleet operations.

An earlier proposal for AI-enabled bus stops also included information on routes, frequency, waiting times and passenger footfall. An audio facility was also proposed to allow commuters to seek information about bus services.
