In a significant step towards improving healthcare access in Delhi, the newly formed BJP-led government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre to roll out the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in the national capital.
With this move, Delhi becomes the 35th state or Union Territory to implement the flagship health insurance scheme, leaving West Bengal as the only state yet to adopt it.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme offers free and cashless treatment for 1,961 medical procedures across 27 specialities, including surgeries, medicines, diagnostics, ICU care, and hospitalisation.
Under the scheme, eligible families in Delhi will receive up to ₹10 lakh in annual coverage—₹5 lakh from the Centre and a ₹5 lakh top-up from the Delhi government.
The MoU was signed between the Delhi government and the National Health Authority in the presence of Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, among other dignitaries.
The National Health Authority is responsible for overseeing the scheme’s implementation across the country.
Following the MoU, a citywide enrollment campaign will be launched to register eligible beneficiaries.
Notably, the BJP-led government, which came to power in Delhi in February after over 26 years, approved the scheme’s implementation during its very first cabinet meeting, soon after Chief Minister Gupta and her council of ministers were sworn in on February 20.
