Delta Air Lines has announced it will offer $30,000 to each passenger involved in a crash this week at Toronto’s main airport. A company spokesperson clarified that this gesture is unconditional and will not affect passengers’ rights.
On Monday, a Delta plane traveling from Minneapolis hit the runway hard, causing the aircraft to flip upside down. A fireball and thick smoke engulfed the plane as it skidded to a stop, but thankfully, none of the 80 passengers onboard were killed.
Though 21 passengers sustained injuries, including back sprains, head injuries, anxiety, and headaches, only one person was still hospitalized as of Wednesday. Dramatic footage, verified by AFP, showed the Bombardier CRJ-900 coming in for a landing before crashing into the runway, rolling forward with its wings sheared off, and finally halting upside down.
An investigation into the crash has been launched by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board, with support from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, Delta, and Mitsubishi, which purchased Bombardier’s CRJ aircraft line in 2019.
This incident adds to a series of aviation accidents in North America, including a recent midair collision between a U.S. Army helicopter and a passenger jet in Washington that claimed 67 lives, as well as a medical transport plane crash in Philadelphia, killing seven.
