Following widespread outrage over skyrocketing airfares from Srinagar, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday issued an advisory directing airlines to take urgent measures to support stranded passengers. This move comes in the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which led to a sudden spike in demand as tourists scrambled to leave the region.
Social media users shared screenshots revealing steep airfare hikes—some nearly three times the usual price—for flights from Srinagar to major Indian cities like Delhi. Many criticized private airlines for allegedly profiting from a crisis situation.

In its advisory, the DGCA urged airlines to immediately increase the number of flights from Srinagar and ensure smooth, uninterrupted connectivity to key destinations. It also requested carriers to waive cancellation and rescheduling fees to support passengers facing distress due to the unexpected situation.
“In the aftermath of the incident in Pahalgam, there is an unexpected demand from tourists seeking to return to their homes,” the DGCA noted, emphasizing the need for compassion and cooperation.
The aviation watchdog also asked airlines to provide all necessary assistance to affected travelers and maintain fair pricing practices during emergencies. The advisory aims to address concerns and ensure safe and affordable travel for those impacted.
