Filmmaker Uttam Maheshwari has issued a public apology following criticism over the timing of his new project Operation Sindoor, which draws inspiration from India’s recent military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The announcement, made shortly after the real-life incident, sparked backlash on social media, with many accusing the director of being insensitive during a period of national mourning and reflection.
In a statement posted online, Maheshwari clarified that he never intended to offend or exploit the situation. “My sincere apologies for recently announcing a film based on Operation Sindoor, inspired by the recent heroic efforts of our Indian Armed Forces. The intent was never to hurt or provoke anyone’s sentiments,” he wrote.
Explaining the motivation behind the project, Maheshwari said he was deeply moved by the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers and wished to share their story through cinema. “I was moved by the courage, sacrifice, and strength of our soldiers and leadership, and simply wished to bring this powerful story to light,” he added.
He further emphasized that the film was made from a place of patriotism and not personal gain. “However, I understand the timing and sensitivity may have caused discomfort or pain to some. For that, I deeply regret,” the director stated.
Calling Operation Sindoor more than just a film, Maheshwari said, “This is not just a film, it’s an emotion of the entire nation and a social image of the country globally.”
