A wedding in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, took a dramatic turn when the groom showed up intoxicated and ended up garlanding the bride’s best friend instead of the bride. The incident unfolded on Saturday, leading to a chaotic scene.
The bride, 21-year-old Radha Devi, was furious after the groom, 26-year-old Ravindra Kumar, arrived late at the venue with his baraat (wedding procession). According to an FIR filed by the bride’s family, the groom’s family demanded additional dowry. Radha’s father had already provided Rs 2.5 lakh during the pre-wedding ceremonies and another Rs 2 lakh on the morning of the wedding, but this was not deemed sufficient by the groom’s family.
Another version of events suggests that Ravindra Kumar had different intentions, allegedly wanting to marry a woman of his choice. He reportedly arrived drunk and behaved inappropriately with the bride’s family and guests.
As the wedding rituals began, the groom, having already been drinking with his friends, was supposed to exchange garlands with Radha. However, in his intoxicated state, he mistakenly garlanded her best friend instead. Enraged by this, Radha slapped the groom and walked out, calling off the wedding. This triggered a violent altercation between both families, with chairs being thrown in the heat of the moment. The situation escalated until the police arrived and intervened. The groom and his wedding party were escorted out of the venue.
The police detained the groom and his friends, filing a case for insulting the bride’s family and disturbing public peace. Additionally, a dowry-related case was registered against the groom. One of the groom’s friends was arrested for supplying illicit liquor to him.
