Fierce Dust Storms and Rain Disrupt Life Across Delhi-NCR, Trigger Power Cuts

A dramatic shift in weather caught Delhi-NCR residents off guard Friday evening as powerful dust storms, gusty winds, and scattered rain swept across the region. The sudden squall uprooted trees and disrupted power lines, with several areas reporting blackouts and traffic snarls.

Temperature levels dropped sharply due to the storm. The Palam station recorded a fall of 10 degrees Celsius, while Safdarjung saw a 7-degree dip, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Over 20 complaints of fallen trees were reported in busy areas like Feroz Shah Road, Ashoka Road, Mandi House, and Connaught Place. Civic bodies and emergency services were flooded with calls, with NDMC and MCD responding to multiple tree-fall incidents in Jor Bagh, Shahdara, and Kalkaji.

The IMD, which had issued an orange alert, advised residents to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from loose or hanging objects. The warning highlighted possible risks like injury from flying debris, minor damage to temporary shelters, and electrical hazards.

Wind speeds were intense: IGI Airport recorded gusts of 74 kmph, Pragati Maidan 70 kmph, and Lodhi Road 69 kmph.

Power disruptions hit parts of north Delhi including Narela, Bawana, and Mangolpuri, mainly due to trees damaging electric poles and cables. Tata Power’s teams acted swiftly, restoring electricity in most areas, though minor issues remained.

Residents were also urged to secure homes, unplug devices, and avoid sheltering under trees or concrete structures during the storm.
