SGPC Files FIR Against Comedian Bharti Singh For Allegedly Mocking Sikh Ethics

Comedy Bharti Singh who is popular and loved for her spontaneous humor and perfect comic timings has unwantedly landed into trouble. She recently made comments on beard and mustache in one episode of The Kapil Sharma Show. And it eventually did not go well with the Sikh community.

Now, SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) has lodged an official complaint against the comedian for allegedly making fun of the Sikh beard and mustache. In the complaint, SGPC has mentioned that even though Bharti did not name the Sikh community in her statement, beard and mustache do count under five kakkars of Sikhs.

The additional secretary of SGPC, Pratap Singh quoted, “Despite being born and brought up in the holy city Amritsar, she had made a deliberate attempt to gain cheap publicity by mocking the Sikh swaroop (appearance). We have received complaints from the Sikh global community and we believe that her statement has hurt the Sikh sentiments. She is liable to face stern legal action so that no one would dare to repeat it.

As per the reports of The Tribune, DCP Parminder Singh Bhandal stated, “FIR has been registered with the Kotwali police station on the basis of SGPC’s complaint. Several human rights and Sikh organizations, including the SAD’s women wing, staged a protest in Amritsar against Bharti. Holding banners against Bharti they demanded to book her under Section 295-A IPC for mocking Sikh ethics and principles.

Before the matter came into the eyes of SGPC, Bharti’s statement had offended Babbu Maan, who in a live show talked about it. Babbu Maan condemned the statement and said he can give an answer to both Kapil Sharma and Bharti Singh face to face.

Bharti is facing criticism and outrage from Sikh Community for her statement in which she had said, “There are various benefits of beard and mustache. As you drink milk and add some beard in your mouth, it tastes like seviyaan. Also, many of my friends stay busy picking lice from the long beard of their husbands.”

Though Bharti has already issued an apology regarding her statement and also clarified that she was misinterpreted and misunderstood. She said that nowhere did she mention any religion or community. She herself is Sikh and respects the religion, said the comedian.
