The Gauhati High Court granted anticipatory bail to YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani on Friday in connection with a case filed by the city police over the controversy surrounding the India’s Got Latent show. The court had earlier granted him interim bail on February 18.
His lawyer, Joyraj Borah, confirmed the development, stating, “After going through the case diary, the high court granted anticipatory bail to the petitioner.” Alongside Borah, advocates Hiranya Kumar Nath, Apoorv Srivastava, and Avinash Lalwani argued that Chanchlani had fully cooperated with the investigation as per the HC’s previous orders.
Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita’s bench made the interim relief permanent, ensuring anticipatory bail for Chanchlani. The FIR, registered on February 10, invokes provisions from the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), IT Act, Cinematograph Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
On February 27, Chanchlani appeared before Guwahati Police, where he was questioned for several hours. On the same day, content creator Ranveer Allahbadia, known as BeerBiceps, was also interrogated in the case.
In addition to Chanchlani and Allahbadia, comedians Samay Raina, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija have been named in the FIR, along with the owner of the venue where the show was filmed. The case stems from multiple FIRs lodged across the country regarding controversial remarks made in the show about parents and sex.
