Our eyes are one of our most precious senses, yet we often ignore their health until problems arise. Glaucoma is one such hidden threat-it harms the optic nerve slowly and quietly, and is one of the main causes of blindness across the world.
Most people don’t realize they have glaucoma until their vision starts fading. In India, more than 10 million people suffer from it. Though there is no permanent cure, catching it early can slow down the damage.
Dr Adrian Braganza, an eye expert from Narayana Nethralaya, Bengaluru, explained that glaucoma usually starts because of increased pressure in the eye. This pressure harms the optic nerve, and once damage is done, it cannot be reversed. The scary part—it usually doesn’t hurt or show symptoms in early stages, which is why regular eye exams are very important.
People over 40, those with diabetes, nearsightedness, or a family history of glaucoma are more at risk. Dr Braganza said new technology like OCT scans, tonometry, and vision field tests can now catch glaucoma early.
After diagnosis, regular check-ups help doctors see if treatments like drops, laser, or surgery are working. Newer treatment options-like long-lasting drops or less painful surgeries-are helping patients better manage this lifelong condition.
Dr Braganza also stressed the need for awareness-through education, eye camps, and easier access to eye care-especially in urban and semi-urban areas.
Early action, regular check-ups, and the right treatment can help people keep their sight safe for years.
