Tech giant Google has paid tribute to the victims of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad by displaying a black ribbon on its homepage. The ribbon appears just below the search bar, and when users hover over it, a message reads: “In memory of the victims of the tragic plane crash.”
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday when a London-bound Air India flight, AI171, crashed shortly after takeoff, bursting into flames. The aircraft, a Boeing 737 Dreamliner, was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew. Sadly, 241 people lost their lives in the crash. Only one person survived and is currently being treated for injuries.
The plane crashed into the BJ Medical College and the city civil hospital complex near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Among the deceased were 169 Indians, 53 British citizens, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals.
Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft lose altitude rapidly before crashing and erupting into a massive blaze, with thick black smoke visible from far away. The crash also caused fatalities on the ground, marking it as one of the worst aviation tragedies in India in recent years.
