Government Sends Test Emergency Alert to Phones Across India – Here’s What It Means

On Saturday, mobile phone users across India received a sudden popup alert on their screens from the Department of Telecom. The message read, “Test Alert, It is a ‘test cell broadcast’ message and requires no action from the recipient.” Dated 28/06/2025, this message left many people surprised and wondering what it was about.

The alert was part of a nationwide test of the Cell Broadcast Alert System, a special emergency communication tool developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). This system is designed to quickly send out important warnings during natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, or other major threats.

Unlike regular text messages that go to individuals, cell broadcasts are sent to all phones in a specific area at the same time. This ensures that everyone in a potentially dangerous zone gets the message immediately, without overloading mobile networks.

If you found the alert disruptive, you can turn off test alerts on your phone.
Android users can go to Settings > Security & emergency > Wireless emergency alerts and switch off Test alerts.
iPhone users can go to Settings > Notifications and scroll down to turn off Test alerts.

Although it may have felt unexpected, this system is a vital step toward improving public safety. In real emergencies, these alerts can provide life-saving information and guide people on what actions to take.
