Gulmarg Fashion Show Sparks Outrage, Omar Abdullah Promises Action

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vowed action following public outrage over a fashion show held in Gulmarg on March 7. The event, showcasing a ski-wear collection, was reportedly part of a ski festival by a well-known designer label. A viral video showed models walking on a snow-covered ramp at the Elle India fashion show by designer duo Shivam and Narresh, sparking criticism on social media.

Omar, responding to the backlash, assured swift action and sought an official report. “The shock & anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities and that too, during this holy month (Ramzan). My office has been in touch with the local authorities and asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours… action, as appropriate, will follow,” he posted on X. His statement was in response to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief priest of Jamia Masjid.

Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz condemned the event, stating that such activities in the name of tourism promotion “won’t be tolerated.” He expressed concern over the show’s timing during Ramzan, calling it inappropriate for a region known for its Sufi traditions and religious values. Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat also raised questions about the authorities granting permission for the event, stressing the need to prevent such incidents.

Online users joined the criticism, with one X user, Ali Azhar, calling the show “an outrageous attack on our moral, ethical, cultural, and religious values.”
