Kiren Rijiju, The Union Minister for YouthAffairs and Sports, congratulated Gurpreet Singh for achieving the feat through a tweet.

The Athletic Federation Of India (AFI) has also announced the 26-member team which will represent India in various events at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Gurpreet Singh is the fourth man to qualify for the race walk events and the only representative in the 50 km race walk. The other three, KT Irfan, Sandeep Kumar and Rahul Rohila will represent India in the 20km race walk event.

The 50 km race walk event is the longest event at the Olympics. Interestingly, it is also the only athletics event held at all the major championships that is contested only by men.

The current Olympics Champion is Matej Tóth of Slovakia, who bagged the Gold Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. France’s Yohann Diniz is the current World Record holder in the event with the time of 3:32.33 which he achieved in Zürich in 2014. The Olympic Games Record is held by Australia’s Jared Tallent with a time of 3:36.53 which he set at London Olympics 2012.
