A housing society in Gurugram has come under fire after imposing fines on domestic helpers and delivery staff for using the main lift instead of the designated service lift. The issue came to light when a Reddit user posted images of a notice and fine receipts, sparking widespread outrage online. The notice, prominently displayed inside the building, clearly instructed domestic workers and delivery personnel to use only the service lift.
One of the fine receipts showed a woman named Kajal, identified as a “maid,” who was penalized ₹100 for violating the rule. This move has been met with significant criticism, with many calling it discriminatory. The society’s enforcement of separate lift usage for workers has raised concerns about inequality and segregation.
The post also highlighted other controversial fines imposed by the society, including penalties for hanging laundry on balconies, taking pets through the main elevator or garden, and walking aggressive pets without a leash or muzzle. Many online users expressed shock at these fines, labeling them excessive and unreasonable. One user remarked that while such notices are common in societies across Gurgaon, this was the first instance they had seen of penalties being issued for such rules.
The situation has sparked a broader conversation about the treatment of domestic workers and delivery staff, with many questioning the fairness of such regulations and the impact on the daily lives of essential workers.
