HC Grants Bail To Expelled AAP Minister Vijay Singla In Alleged Corruption Case

Vijay Singla, the former health minister of Punjab who was expelled by chief minister Bhagwant Mann after being accused of taking bribe, has been granted bail by the High court today. Singla filed a petition in the high court, after his plea was rejected by a local court in Mohali.

He was arrested on May 24 by Punjab police due to corruption charges against him. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann then dismissed him from the state cabinet and ordered the Punjab police to register an FIR against him. Vijay Singla is the one who defeated renowned Punjabi singer late Sidhu Moose Wala from Mansa constituency in the assembly elections held in February this year.

Since his dismissal, the Bhagwant Mann government has completely distanced itself from Singla. The AAP leadership, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, called it the Aam Aadmi Party’s policy of “zero tolerance againt corruption”. Including Mr. Kejriwal, a lot other senior AAP leaders had lauded CM Mann over the action against his own minister.

Apart from the party’s own leaders, even senior BJP leader and former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shanta Kumar, had praised Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann over his action against the then minister Vijay Singla. Though Singla himself had denied the charges against him, and now the high court has granted him a regular bail in the case.

Though, since Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder, the political atmosphere in Punjab had changed for the Aam Aadmi Party, which was reflected in the results of the recently held Sangrur Lok Sabha by-poll, where SAD (Amritsar)’s candidate Simranjit Singh Mann defeated the Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Gurmail Singh.
