‘Hek’ Queen Gurmeet Bawa Awarded With Padma Bhushan Posthumously

Veteran Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa, popularly known as ‘lambi hek di mallika’, died on 21 November 2021. Now after two months of her demise, the late singer has conferred Padma Bhushan posthumously on 25 January 2022.

Bawa passed away at the age of 77 due to a short illness award for her distinguished contribution in the field of art.. Reports of Hindustan Times suggest that reacting to the honour announced posthumously, her daughter Galori Bawa said, “Due to the death of my mother and sister, we passed through a tragic period. However, the announcement of the award is a great honour for our family and a matter of pride for us, for which we are thankful to the Centre, Punjab government and those who contributed to secure this award for my mother”.

“But it would have been better if she would have got it when she was alive. She should have been given this honour in view of her great contribution to the field of art. Yet, we are satisfied,” she added.

Meanwhile, speaking of Gurmeet, she was one among the first woman artiste to perform on Doordarshan (DD), Bawa was known for her 45-second ‘hek’ (alaap which is usually sung at the beginning of the song). She has sung several duet songs with her husband Kirpal Bawa, who is also a folk singer.

Moreover, she had started her career in 1968. She was known to sing with Punjabi folk instruments such as algoze, chimta, dholki and tumbi.
