Himachal Pradesh Issues Circular on Teacher Dress Code, Withdraws Magic Show Directive

The Himachal Pradesh Education Department has issued a circular recommending a dress code for teachers in schools. Education Minister Rohit Thakur explained the decision, highlighting the importance of teachers’ attire. “The Education Department has issued a circular with the intent that teachers, who hold a special place in our society, should come to school in a dignified and decent dress. This has a positive impact on our society, especially on students,” he told ANI.

However, he clarified that the dress code is not being strictly enforced across the state. He cited a school in Hamirpur that voluntarily adopted the policy, adding, “I believe that any good initiative should always be appreciated. I cannot say for certain that this will be enforced throughout the state, but the most important thing is that teachers should wear decent and dignified attire that upholds decorum.”

Meanwhile, another directive in the education sector caused controversy. A letter from the Deputy Director of Elementary Education instructed schools to organize magic shows and deposit the proceeds into the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Minister Thakur clarified that this was not an official notification but simply a letter, which he ordered to be withdrawn. “This was not a notification; it was merely a letter issued by the deputy director of elementary education. I immediately ordered its withdrawal. It is highly unfortunate that such a letter was issued. Strict action will be taken against the concerned official,” he stated.

The incident has sparked concerns about administrative oversight in the education department. However, the minister’s quick response and assurance of accountability have been seen as necessary corrective steps.
