Several parts of Hyderabad came to a standstill on Wednesday after relentless rains led to severe waterlogging in key localities. As downpours lashed the city, roads turned into streams, causing major traffic jams and inconvenience to commuters during peak hours.
Heavy rain was reported in areas like Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, and Nampally. Visuals circulating online showed submerged vehicles, stranded pedestrians, and overflowing manholes.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received over 10 cm of rain in just a few hours. The downpour led to immediate urban flooding, especially in low-lying zones. Traffic police and GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) teams were deployed to clear the clogged roads and assist in managing traffic.
Several residents complained of water entering their homes, especially in basements and ground floors. Schools remained shut in some parts, while office-goers struggled to reach their workplaces on time.
The GHMC’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams worked overnight to drain flooded areas and responded to over 150 waterlogging complaints across the city.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors unless necessary and avoid traveling through heavily inundated routes. More rain is predicted in the coming days, prompting officials to remain on high alert.
With Hyderabad’s drainage system under stress, experts are calling for urgent long-term measures to tackle the city’s growing vulnerability to flash floods during monsoon season.
