A 39-year-old scientist from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, lost his life after a heated parking dispute in Sector 67 escalated into violence. Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar, originally from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, got into an argument with his neighbor, Monty, on Tuesday night. The confrontation turned physical when Monty allegedly pushed him to the ground and struck him.
Dr. Swarnkar, a distinguished scientist with internationally recognized work, had recently returned to India after working in Switzerland. He had undergone a kidney transplant, with his sister donating a kidney, and was on dialysis. Following the assault, he was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A CCTV recording shows local residents, including Monty, gathered near the scientist’s bike. Dr. Swarnkar approaches to move his vehicle, leading to an argument. Monty then pushes him to the ground and starts hitting him before family members intervene. The footage also captures Dr. Swarnkar lying on the ground as neighbors step out of their homes.
His family has called for strict action against the accused. Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and are analyzing the footage for further investigation. The incident once again raises concerns over rising cases of parking-related violence in urban areas, with similar disputes frequently making headlines across major cities.
