Indian Navy to Acquire 26 Rafale-M Jets in Landmark Rs 63,000 Crore Deal

In a major boost to its maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy is set to seal a landmark Rs 63,000 crore agreement today for the acquisition of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets from France. These cutting-edge jets, renowned for their exceptional performance, will soon operate from India’s aircraft carriers — INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya — strengthening the country’s presence in the Indian Ocean.

The deal, which comprises 22 single-seater Rafale-M aircraft and four twin-seater trainers, will phase out the ageing MiG-29K fleet. Deliveries are expected to commence in a few years, with the full fleet anticipated by 2031. Although the French Defence Minister will not be present for the signing, senior officials from Dassault Aviation and India’s Defence Secretary will formalize the agreement.

Notably, the Rafale-M is currently flown only by the French Navy and is regarded as one of the finest carrier-based fighter jets in the world. In line with India’s push for self-reliance, Dassault Aviation will also integrate Indian-made Astra missiles into the Rafale-M fleet.

This historic procurement, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 9, also cements strategic defence ties between India and France, opening doors for future collaborations in co-production and technology sharing.

With this addition, India’s Rafale fleet — already operating 36 fighters with the Indian Air Force — will grow to 62, significantly enhancing its 4.5-generation combat strength.
