India’s active Covid-19 cases have gone up to 5,755, with Kerala seeing the highest rise, followed by Gujarat and Delhi. As per the Health Ministry’s latest update, 391 new cases were reported since Friday.
Kerala has the most cases at 1,806, followed by Gujarat with 717 and Delhi with 665. West Bengal has reported 622 cases, Maharashtra 577, Karnataka 444, and Uttar Pradesh 208. Other states like Tamil Nadu (194), Puducherry (13), Haryana (87), Andhra Pradesh (72), Madhya Pradesh (32), and Goa (9) have also recorded a few cases.
So far, 59 people have died in recent weeks. In the past 24 hours alone, four deaths were reported, including a 45-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh and a 79-year-old man from Tamil Nadu who tested positive for Covid. It’s still not confirmed if Covid was the cause of all four deaths.
Health officials have urged people not to panic, saying that the current Covid cases are mild and manageable. States are on alert, and necessary precautions are being taken.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the current rise is due to sub-variants of Omicron, the strain that caused the major wave in 2022. These sub-variants are named LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1.
Dr. Rajiv Behl from ICMR explained that there’s no sign of severe illness right now. “When we monitor Covid, we check three things — how fast it spreads, how many people are getting seriously ill, and how quickly cases double. This time, the spread is slow, and there’s no sharp spike,” he said.
In short, while the number of cases has risen slightly, the infections are mild and under control.
