US Vice President J.D. Vance is set to visit India next week with his Indian-American wife, Usha Vance, and their children-Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. The trip, which includes stops in New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, seeks to strengthen Indo-US ties across trade, immigration, and security.
Vance will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday in New Delhi to reaffirm a shared Indo-Pacific vision and push forward ongoing trade negotiations. Both nations are eyeing a fall 2025 timeline for a preliminary trade deal, which was initiated after Modi’s US visit in February. Despite this progress, concerns remain over President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of “reciprocal tariffs”-including a 27% duty on Indian exports.
India has expressed readiness to lower tariffs on about 55% of US exports worth $23 billion. In 2024, the US imported goods worth $87.4 billion from India while exporting $41.75 billion, resulting in a $45.6 billion trade deficit with India.
Vance’s visit will also highlight cooperation against human trafficking and illegal immigration. Earlier this year, 332 undocumented Indian migrants were deported from the US. Both countries have agreed to streamline legal travel while cracking down on illegal migration networks.
This marks the most significant visit by a US official since Trump took office. The Vances had previously met Modi in Paris in February and were present at the White House during Modi’s US visit.
Before arriving in India, the Second Family will make a stop in Italy.
