The body of 39-year-old Sonam Tiwari, daughter-in-law of prominent Jalandhar industrialist Naresh Tiwari, was recovered from the Beas river near Goindwal Sahib on Monday, two days after she was reported missing.
According to police reports, Sonam had been battling mental health issues following a recent medical diagnosis, which included a brain cyst. On Saturday evening, she visited the Beas river with a friend to perform a ritual (upaay) in hopes of healing. She asked her friend to stay near their vehicle while she went to the riverbank alone. Tragically, she jumped into the water due to the emotional distress she had been experiencing.
Her disappearance sparked a widespread search effort over the weekend, with her family posting appeals on social media. The police launched an extensive operation involving divers, and her body was finally discovered on Monday afternoon.
Arjun Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Talwandi Chaudhrian police station, confirmed, “Sonam’s body was found between 2 and 3 pm today. As per the family, she was under immense mental stress. We’ve registered the case under Section 174 of IPC (BNS 208), and a postmortem will be held on Tuesday.”
Navdeep Tiwari, her brother-in-law, shared that her medical diagnosis had deeply affected her. “We found her slippers near the river and feared the worst,” he said.
Police noted that no allegations have been made by either her in-laws or parental family. The autopsy will be conducted at Kapurthala’s Civil Hospital.
