A mess worker at Jamia Millia Islamia University has been detained for allegedly assa*lting a Kashmiri woman student on campus. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm on April 27 when a 24-year-old second-year MA student was reportedly attacked by a 22-year-old mess worker, Abid. Though the student has yet to file a formal complaint, police expect her to do so soon, after which an FIR will be lodged. Authorities believe the altercation stemmed from a personal dispute.
The assa*lt reportedly took place outside Gate 8 of the campus. While the university administration has yet to release an official statement, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) condemned the incident, calling it a severe security lapse. They alleged the assault was connected to the harassment of Kashmiri students following the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, though police maintain it was a personal matter.
AISA criticized the security staff for their inaction during the assault, claiming they allowed the attacker to return to campus without being questioned. The group called for a transparent investigation and strict action against both the attacker and the security personnel involved.
In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has set up emergency helplines and created a support team for students, working closely with authorities. The Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, remains one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel.
