Jaya Bachchan Criticizes Akshay Kumar’s Films, Calls Toilet: Ek Prem Katha a Flop

Jaya Bachchan Criticizes Akshay Kumar’s Socially Driven Films, Calls Them ‘Flops’

Veteran actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan has sparked controversy with her recent remarks about Akshay Kumar’s films Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Padman. Speaking at the India TV She Conclave, she not only dismissed these socially conscious films as “flops” but also criticized their titles.

During the event, Bachchan questioned the naming of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, expressing her reluctance to watch a film with such a title. She remarked, “Just look at the name. I would never watch a film with such a title. Is this even a proper name? Tell me, how many of you would go to see a movie with a title like this?” She further added, “The film flopped.”

Despite Bachchan’s criticism, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, released in 2017, was a significant box-office success, earning over ₹216 crore globally. The film, inspired by true events, supported the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign and was even praised by Bill Gates for spreading awareness about sanitation.

Similarly, Padman (2018), which addressed menstrual hygiene, was well-received and grossed over ₹191 crores worldwide. Both films were applauded for bringing crucial social issues to mainstream cinema.

Following Jaya Bachchan’s comments, Akshay Kumar’s fans and netizens defended the films, emphasizing the importance of socially relevant cinema. Many believe such movies should be encouraged rather than dismissed.

Bachchan is no stranger to making bold statements. Whether it’s her interactions with the paparazzi or her outspoken political opinions, she often finds herself in the headlines. However, her latest remarks have left many questioning whether films with social messages deserve such criticism.
