The controversy over the release of Bollywood actress, filmmaker and MP Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ does not seem to end. While the censor board has made it clear in the court that it will not give the green signal to release the film without cuts, on Friday Kangana has once again said that she will not make any cuts in ‘Emergency’. The actress said that the censor board has suggested 13 cuts in the film, but these suggestions are ‘quite inappropriate’ and her team is adamant on this.
Kangana Ranaut is the lead actress of ‘Emergency’ as well as its director and co-producer. She said in clear words that her team is ‘determined to maintain the authenticity of the film’ and hence will not tamper with it. She is playing the role of late Indira Gandhi in the film.
Kangana Ranaut said, ‘We have received suggestions for cuts, but some of these suggestions seem quite inappropriate… The good thing is that most of the historians and review committee members have praised our film for showing a leader in the most credible and factual way. They have especially appreciated our unwavering commitment to the truth, in which even the smallest thing has not been compromised. Their support increases enthusiasm.’
Kangana, BJP MP from Mandi, further said, ‘This praise received by the film confirms that we have given the story the respect it deserves. Still, we stand by our side and are ready to protect the integrity of the film. We want to ensure that the essence of the film remains intact.’
It is worth noting that Sikh organizations including Shiromani Akali Dal have objected to ‘Emergency’. It is alleged that the Sikh community has been misrepresented in the film and historical facts have been shown incorrectly. Earlier this film was to be released on 6 September. But it is stuck due to not getting the clearance certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The makers have filed an application in the Bombay High Court in this regard.
The petition was heard in the court last Thursday, where the censor board told the Bombay High Court that if the cuts suggested by them are made in the film, then they have no objection in giving the certificate for its release. Zee-Studios’ lawyer had said in the court that the team needs time to consider whether these cuts can be made or not. The next hearing in the case is to be held on September 30.
